Presidential Commission -Document & Photos – Medals Lot For US Artillery Officer.

This small archive of material was for a career army officer – Brigadier General Joseph M. Califf.  General Califf (1843 – 1914), was graduated at the Naval Academy in 1860; transferred to and  commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant during the Civil War into the 4th Regiment, US Colored Troops in October of 1863; 1st Lieut. March of 1865; he mustered out in 1866.  Appointed 2nd Lieutenant 3rd U.S. Artillery, August 1867 and rose to major by 1901.  Lt. Colonel May of 1904, brigadier general, March of 1906.  Service in the Civil War, Dept. of the South, commanded a battery of artillery in Cuba, and the Philippines, and authored the “History of the 7th Regiment, United States Colored Troops, 1878.”

This archive consists of Califf’s:

  • 1868 dated Commission to 2nd Lt., signed by President Andrew Johnson (printed signature), and Secretary of War, J.M. Schofield. (overall in very good condition by has some water staining upper left side.
  • Cabinet photo (5 x 10″) of Capt. Califf on horseback, noted on back, “Joseph Mark Califf, (Captain) / Puerta Rico / 1898.”
  • Cabinet photo (9 x 11″) of Major Califf  with officers at “Fort Douglas, Utah / 1903.”  (a chip out of the mat -other roughness on mat edges, but image is very good.
  • Navy document signed by Secretary of the Navy, Isaac Toucey; form document appointing Califf an Acting Midshipman in the Navy, dated 27 September, 1860.
  • War Department form letter, dated March 26, 1867, an accompanying letter that came with his commission as Brevet Captain, signed by AAG J.C. Kelton.
  • Adjutant General’s Office form letter, dated February 24, 1876, notification of commission to 1st lieutenant in the 3rd Artillery. signed by AAG Thomas M, Vincent.
  • Printed flyer, “Program of CONCERT. TO BE GIVEN BY THE Third U.S. Artillery Band.  Fort Hamilton, NY, 1886.
  • Printed Roster of Brigade U.S. Troops / Yorktown, Va, October 12 to 23, 1884.  Centennial Celebration. 4 page pamphlet naming the officers in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd U.S. Artillery regiments, and battalion of the 10th U.S. Infantry, Light Batteries of the 2nd, and 3rd Artillery, Detached Battery K, 1st U.S. Artillery (mounted as Cavalry), and list of Medical officers.
  • War Department, form letter, dated October 30, 1896, informing Califf he has been appointed by the President to be a captain of Artillery, signed by the Secretary of War, Daniel S.Lamont.
  • MOLLUS notice of election as a Companion 1st Class into the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.  Dated and sealed October 4, 1894.
  • War Department document dated Jan. 2, 1897, transmitting Califf’s commission to captain. Signed by AAG W.P Hall.
  • First Provisional Regiment, Field Artillery, General Orders No.1, Fort Riley, Kansas, August 1, 1903.  Listing the command structure of the unit, Califf named Lt. Colonel.
  • MOLLUS Medal, un-numbered in fine condition.
  • USWV membership badge, as a post commander, fine condition.

 

All the documents are in very good condition with some minor flaws. Medals are fine, Comes with a thick portfolio of copied documents for the National Archives.

A nice group of material for a career army general.
