Description

After the Civil War years, the Army was slow to improve on the many aspects of its uniforms and equipment.  In the case of these white cotton duck blouses, the climate in the southwestern territories was too severe for the wool uniform material the quartermaster was accustomed to issuing.  As soldiers will do in the field, they made up these blouses starting in the early 80’s to survive the heat, and despite the approval of commanders in the west, the adoption of this summer blouse came slow, and not until 1888 did the issue of these begin.

It was constructed pretty much as the issue wool 5 button blouse.  Allowance was made for the need for constant laundering, and the blouse was made so that buttons were detachable; held in place by rings that would hold the general service button in place.

The condition of this piece is fine, with only the slightest bit of wear and soiling.  Considering the delicate nature of the material and the hard service they saw, these are quite scarce.  This is the first I have had the opportunity to purchase.  I know that the buttons are correct for the blouse, but not original to it.

A super display item.
