Description
I have owned this one baldric, and have seen just the box offered for sale recently. The Baldric is intended for dress occasions only, and made of a leather strap with red silk and gold bullion tape (1 3/4 inches wide), and mounted with gilt brass furniture. Two mechanical pencils are held in a gilt plate; handy for an officer to take notes from a superior, for himself,or maintaining a dance card, etc. Note that the officer has Coast Artillery Corps insignia on the cuff of his 1902 dress uniform.
The plate on the box incorporates the Army eagle insignia with signal flags crossed beneath. The interior flag has the stamp of the retailer, Warnock & Co./ New York.
These baldrics do not have the length of a cartridge box or sword sling, but like the British style were short and the box would ride on the back, just below the left shoulder; more for show than functional.
Included with this baldric are two reproduced images of a Lt. Hanson B. Block of the Coast Artillery in dress uniform in pose with his detachment of signalmen during the California Earthquake of 1906. I do not know if this baldric was Block’s, unfortunately both coming from a 50 year collection that recently came to the market, and some of the history of these items was lost.
Condition if fine – excellent with only some wear to the leather on the edges and underside. The gilt is still frosty and shows very little use. Not having another to compare, I have to say it’s the best out there.
