Description

The left sleeve of this coat boasts a rare Theater-made blue diamond shaped patch, with a hand-embroidered crest of Florence Italy and the letters “UTC”.   UTC, or University Training Command was set up in Florence, Italy post-war.  This center offered hands on training for soldiers who would soon be applying for civilian jobs.  We found some conflicting information; one source claims that this school sent through around 30,000 soldiers in a 6 month span.  Another source with information from a Veteran describes the school as offering one-month courses to around 3,000 soldiers in a 6 month span of time.  It is our opinion that in a six month time period it is highly unlikely for 30,000 soldiers to shuffle through this small and specialized school.

Florence University

Previous to being part of UTC, this Sergeant was once part of the Fifth Army in Italy.  This patch was theater-made; with bullion on blue fabric and applied to a red wool.  It is sewn on the right sleeve, with his rank and Meritorious service patch to follow. The Sergeant rank patch and Service stripe are not theater made, however the two overseas bars are.

There is evidence that ribbon bars were once affixed, but they did not come with the coat.  The collar holds two clutch-back discs, one U.S., and the other Infantry.  There are matching pin holes on either side of the collar, I will assume that there used to be a Unit of the 5th Army DUI’s at one point.  The ruptured duck is sewn over the right breast pocket, and there is an additional ruptured duck patch inside the pocket.

Inside the lining is the contract label, dated April 16, 1945 with a pattern date of 5/10/44.  The size tag is 34R.  The soldier wrote his name on the lining of his coat, “J. Dow.”  The overseas cap has light blue infantry piping, and is size 7 1/8.  There is a small stain along the bottom the cap.

In very good condition; there is a very small red mark just above the Service stripe.  Small stain along the bottom-outside of the cap, as well as as snag on the piping.

Measures approx. size 34R
