A choice pair of infantry officer’s shoulder straps from the Spanish American War period.
Smith’s Patent straps became popular during the Civil War days, offering officers a quality set of shoulder straps, but not the cost to go with them. They were made of stamped brass, having a (false) embroidered look, and applied stamped rank insignia. The nature of these were the tendency to dent, finish wear off, etc.
This pair of straps for a 1st Lieutenant of Infantry has the white wool background color for infantry at that time. The condition suggests that these are surplus. There is some mothing on the outer border of the dark blue wool. The white wool shows some slight soiling. Overall a fine pair.
The Spanish American War was the last hurrah so to speak for these patent straps. This pair will make a fine addition to the shoulder strap collection.
