Description

This stereoview was taken sometime in the year of 1863, when companies D, F, H, and K of the 47th Pennsylvania Infantry was garrisoned at Fort Jefferson, a remote coastal fort in Florida’s Dry Tortugas. Identified on the reverse, “Left Wing officers of the 47th Pa, Fort Jefferson, No. 15  / Lieut Col. Alexander & officers.”

Mustered in during the late summer-early fall of 1861, the regiment was first ordered to Washington, then ordered to move to South Carolina, then on to Florida, and finally returning north again joining the 19th Corps. In October they were in the Battle of Cedar Creek, and lost the equivalent of two full companies against Gen. Early’s Confederate Army in the Shenandoah Valley.

The image is very good, with some soiling, and some heavier wear on the upper right corner of the mount.

From the Michael McAfee Collection.
