This is a large grouping belonging to Corp. Jno. H. Schindler, Co. G. 18th Infantry Pennsylvania Volunteers.  Included in this lot are several newspaper clippings, personal papers, covers, photos (one clearly shows him wearing his hat), a pocket bible, small notebook, songbook, leather wallet, spectacles, fork and two different letter openers.  There are also several medals and pins including; 2 flag lapel pins, a button, 2 Saengerfest, Pittsburgh 1896 (singing festival), 2 Marksman badges, 2 Camp Mead badges, 1 USWV encampment badge, and 18th Inf. cap insignia.  Several items in the grouping have a very clear identification to Schindler.

The most impressive piece in Schindler’s collection is his 1898 pattern Campaign Hat with snowflake vents.  This ‘Story Hat’ very intricately details his service record with handwritten dates and drawings.  Much of the writing around the brim has faded over time making it hard to see, however the writing it appears to be the names of other men in his company.  Good lighting and magnification might bring out more detail.  The underside of the brim is a nice depiction of the U.S.S. Maine.  Under the sweatband is the hat makers label, “The United Hatters of North America.”  Contract date is stamped, May 26th, 1898.  There is no size label, but I would approximate it being around a 6 3/4.

In overall very good condition.  The hat has some blemishing in places, the sweatband is stained and a bit dry in places.  There are several paper items that may have some blemishing, wear to the edges, tears, loss of paper, some of the newspaper clippings are a bit delicate.  The photos are very good with light scuffs.  The keystone shaped Saengerfest piece is a portion of a badge, it is lacking a pin or ribbon. Other medals have some blemishing and scuffing.  The 18th Infantry cap insignia has a pin, but it has separated from the back.

Please refer to the photos for condition and detail.
