Theater Made Ashtray For Submarine U.S.S. POLLACK (SS-180).

Possibly made from an engine’s piston, this highly polished cylindrical ashtray has a lid that acts as the ashtray, and then turns to drop the cigarette butt into the container below.  Most likely made aboard the sub.

3 3/4 inches high.

USS POLLACK was a Porpoise Class submarine. Built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, and launched 15 September, 1936; commissioned 15 January, 1937.  After her shakedown cruise in the Caribbean, and some duty on the west coast in Sub Div. 13, she was ordered to Pearl Harbor in Oct. of 1939. He spent the entire war in the Pacific Theater, and had 10 combat patrols to her credit. Pollack was decommissioned in September of 1945.
