Description
This is a scarce ammo crate for Spencer Carbine cartridges, shipped from the Sage Ammunition Works, Middletown, Conn., to the San Antonio Arsenal, Texas. The crate measures approximately 12 x 8 x19 inches and is painted in gray-green drab color with multiple stencils. The government stenciling is done in white and the address on one end stenciled in red by the manufacturer.
The date received was in December, and marked on front panel, SAN ANTONIO ARSENAL- DEC. 9 1872.” The 4th US Cavalry was the closest unit to have benefited from the supply of ammunition in this period, although other units could have been supplied from San Antonio as well.
Condition is typical for these crates, with worn edges, chipped wood from quickly open crates, and just wear over time.
Photographed with the crate is a box of Sage Spencer cartridges; a box of 6 packs holding 7 rounds each. The box is complete with some wear to the label. This box of ammo can be purchased with the crate for the additional cost, or can be purchased separately. $495.00
