Description
A harder to find undress coat are these 1892 patterns, not much different than the 1895 undress coats with the exception of the mohair trim on the chest, cuffs, and back. Very ornate in nature for garrison dress, which was all done away with when the new 1895 pattern came, sans previously mentioned braid.
Slits on the sides are very similar to the 1872 pattern coats, the left side higher to accommodate access to the sword hangers on the belt which was worn beneath this coat. The collars were not adorned with branch insignia, only regimental numerals were worn.
The captain of strap shoulders straps are original to the coat; a nice quality in gold bullion and silver bullion rank bars. The inner bars on the straps have toned differently, this officer went back to his clothier and had the addition bars added to match his promotion to captain for 1st Lt., as the backing is gone and exposes the additional bars underside threads. Background black wool.
Made by The PETTIBONE BROS MFG CO. ; their tag sewn on the inside collar. Black cotton lining is in fine condition. Stripped cotton lining in sleeves; “MM” are written on the top of lining on right sleeve. Two inner breast pockets. Cotton covered buttons used to secure the slips when closed.
Overall the condition is excellent, with exception to a tear near the front of the left shoulder strap on uniform shoulder. Hard to see. The threads near the repaired tear are a bit loose. Also, the lowest button on the front is broken and some of the cloth is torn away (not seen with closed).
Overall a super coat, and scarce.
