Description
You see a good number of U.S. Army souvenirs made in the various theaters of operation, but seldom seen from Merchant Marine.
The Merchant Marine played a vital role during the war, transporting men, materiel and supplies all over the globe.
By 1944, the allied roll in the Mediterranean had shifted to the Italian campaign, but taking on fresh supplies, and liberty to crews serving in the Med brought Merchant Marine and Navy ships to North African shores.
This sham was embroidered on a dark purple velvet, with typical American symbols in an array of color. Age, not sunlight has soften the colors some, but still good color is seen.
A bluish/ gray fringe is applied all around the border on this 14″x17″ work.
Many of this shams were made for multiple purpose; for framing as is, making into a pillow by adding a backing (as this one example does not have a backing-never did), or simply just maintained as a keepsake.
Great condition.
