Description

The Model 1858, Type 2 fencing bayonet was made from an 1855 Springfield bayonet.  In fabricating this piece, the blade was cut away, and a box type receptacle was added with a slot to accommodate a baleen ( whalebone) blade) that was tightened down with a thumb screw mounted on the upper flat of the box. These sockets are usually found without the baleen blade with leather ball attached, due to loss and poor lasting power of baleen being subject of insect, age, and general use in the period.

This piece is in the bright (earlier pattern made from 1816 bayonets were finished in brown lacquer), and is in fine condition with only a few small areas of blemishing.

Produced after the Civil War, circa 1870, these bayonets were issued through the 70’s, and perhaps longer, as a new Type 3 was introduced to fit on the M1873 Springfield Rifles.

Overall length is approximately 5.5 inches.
