Description
CDV – 1st Lieutenant Andrew Coats -7th U.S. Colored Infantry. Andrew Coats is not listed on the database for the 7th Colored Infantry, but may have been prior service with the 5th New York, as a corporal, enlisting in May of 1861, and later being wounded at the 2nd Bull Run. in August of 1862; this being the only other listing that might be him as well.
The internet provided verification of identity concerning image and brief military history. He was Scottish born, becoming an officer in the 7th U.S. Colored Infantry at its organization in the fall of 1863. The regiment was deployed along the coastal regions of South Carolina, and Florida. The photo used in the online article is identical to the one being offered here.
Coats was in Company A, and also acted as Acting Assistant Adjutant General, District of Florida, and later joined the Veteran Reserve Corps.
