Description

CDV – Major General Benjamin “The Beast” Butler.

Lawyer, politician, and Union general, Governor of Massachusetts, U.S. Representative.

Received a political appointment in the Mass. Militia, and accompanied the 8th Mass Infantry to Baltimore/ Washington, on of the two first regiments to respond to Abraham Lincoln’s call for volunteers.  In August of 1861, commanded an Expedition to North Carolina, and later the first expedition to the Gulf and the capture of New Orleans, where he was named military governor there.  The nickname came from his order to seize 30 some pieces of silver from a southern woman (with a pass), attempting to cross Union lines.  Although she had a pass, the lady was not permitted to carry anything but the barest of personal items.

Standing view as major general, photographed by Brady, published by Anthony, New York, with cancelled revenue stamp.
