Description
Briddell USMC Hospital Corpsman Bolo / Fighting Knife – Boyt Scabbard Dated ’44.
This WWII USMC Corpsman’s bolo made by Briddell, and marked along with “USMC” on the left side of the blade. The knife was issued with leather with brass furniture scabbard made by Boyt, and dated 1944 on the strap holding the web belt hanger.
Either this hospital Corpsman or another marine modified the blade by grinding off a 6 1/4 inch section of the upper tip to create a “clippoint.” Bolos were made for use by hospital personnel to cut away growth, and other ground cover to create field treatment areas, and for other medical purposes. Obviously, these bolos were used in combat in hand to hand fighting on the Islands in the Pacific, but this marine wanted a fighting knife with the similarities to the classic Bowie style knife.
Overall condition is very good. Wish this one could talk!
