Donaldson was a Marylander, and served in the artillery until after the Mexican War, then transferred to the Quartermaster Corps until his retirement in 1874.

Description
CDV – Lt Colonel James Lowry Donaldson – Brevet Brigadier General.
He graduated from the USMA Class of 1836, and commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the artillery. Following service in the Mexican War, Donaldson transferred to the quartermaster corps. He was promoted to major in 1861, colonel in 1864, and in 1866 was Army Quartermaster General. He had brevets for major, ltcol, colonel, and brigadier general for service in the Mex War, and for meritorious service in connection with the Atlanta Campaign with the Army of the Cumberland. Retired in 1874.
