General Stanley H. Ford’s Grouping Related To Service in the 27th Division, AEF in WWI. This group consists of items from then Colonel Ford’s service with the 27th Division, and his time as Chief of Staff to MG Ryan, commanding the Division.
Not wanting to take medals from the main group coming to the site, this lot comprises just 27th division related items. The items:
- Wrist bracelet engraved, ” Lt.Col. STANLEY H. FORD INF. U.S.A.” and on the opposite, “MACOME ILLINOIS U.S.A.” Appears to be silver but unmarked.
- Single colonel’s eagle
- Two French infantry insignia for the 9th and 18th regiments, both hallmarked ARTHUS BERTRAND, PARIS.
- Ford’s Victory Medal with three bars, and a small citation star.
- Photograph of MG John F. O’Ryan 6 x8.5 inches approx. Has caption on the back.
- Photograph of Col. Ford, 5 x 7.5 inches.
- Photograph of Ford & Gen, O’Ryan taken in France at headquarters. 6.5 x 8.5 inches.
- Small 16 page booklet titled Official Commendations of the 27th American Division Belgium and France 1919. Dedicated to our Comrades of the British Expeditionary Forces…. printed in Paris.
- Citation from the 27th Division to Ford, dated Feb. 1919. Facsimile signatures by O’Ryan and J.A.S. Mundy, Div Adjt. some staining. Rough center fold, with repair on the reverse. This citation (see photo) could very well have led to the award of the Silver Star Medal, depending on review.
- The Gas Attack -home again, a magazine format dedicated to the 27th return home, with much of the publication devoted to the division, and great ads. One page has a tear and missing half the page (ads only). Good content.
- Mayors Commitee of Welcome….Review and Parade of the 27th Division March 25,1919. Gives order of march and names of unit commanders.
- Old Glory Waves In Vieux Bordeaux, published through Base Secton, No.2.
Stanley Hamer Ford (1877 – 1961), began his military career as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 16th U.S. Infantry, then in Cuba, on July 9, 1898, and with subsequent promotions through the years, he made the rank of major general in March of 1936, and retired a lieutenant general on January 31, 1941, after 43 years of service. I have included a complete history for the General in the photograph section with each of the Ford losts offered.
His decorations include: The DSM: “For exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services, as Chief of Staff of the 27th Division, he rendered valuable services in the operations of this division. by tireless energy, good judgment, and keen foresight he proved to be an important factor in the brilliant military operations of the 27th Division.” In addition to, these other decorations and medals were awarded; Officer of the Legion of Honor (France), Croix de Guerre with Palm (Belgium), Philippine Campaign Medal, Spanish War Service Medal, Victory Medal (4 clasps), Distinguished Service Medal (New York State), with Silver Star Citation, and the Cuban Pacification Medal.
