Description
Featured here is an original woman’s best dress from the 1870’s period.
Made of a beautifully warm sage silk/taffeta material, it is lined with linen. This is a three-piece outfit of blouse and skirt with a bustle that can be easily removed. All articles of clothing are hand-sewn.
The blouse is beautifully decorated with black lace, which has a section on each cuff, across the shoulders, and bodice. There are delicately crocheted buttons on the blouse and all are in wonderful condition. Inside the blouse, near the waistline are pieces of cotton material with 2 hooks that would fasten under the bodice. There are stays sewn inside the lower fronts of both sides of the bodice, to help enhance the slimness of the waist. The measurements of the blouse are as follows: At the waist – 25-1/2″ approx.; the front from neck to waist – 13-1/2″ tall; the width of the back shoulders from side-to-side – 16″ wide; and the sleeve inseam is 15″l.
The skirt has a lovely train and is also lined with linen and hand sewn everywhere. The measurements of the skirt are as follows: at the waist – 25-1/2″ approx.; the skirt front from the waist to the feet – 41-1/2″t; back waist to the end of the train – 52″+. approx.
The bustle is beautifully done with a ribbon and is decorated on the edges with the black lace. This can be removed for day wear and/or added for evening best dress, quite nicely.
Condition of the outfit is good, but showing some light fading and stains, and wear due to age and storage.
A beautiful example of an 1870’s period woman’s outfit.
