Description
From the diaries written by Edward M. Offley, an officer in the U.S. Cavalry from 1899 to 1917, he spent a good deal of time on or near the Mexican Border from time to time during his early career. Serving with various regiments, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, etc., he surely had ample time to acquire one of this.
The sombrero show little use as it was always intended to be a souvenir and never worn.
The brim on this straw constructed hat, is 6 1/2 inches wide. It has a decorative band made of cloth, gilt tape, bone pieces on either side of a stamped tin button sewn in place on the left side. One both sides are stamped tin stars sewn on as well, The sweat band is made of cardboard, sewn in and made to look like leather. The lining is a red satin, and a printed paper decorative upper lining has honors won as a Hatters? in Roma 1898, and Paris 1900. From the little figures used on this label it does appear to be Mexican made for sure.
Condition is excellent. I have not read all the diaries cover to cover, but if you look elsewhere on the site you will find Colonel Offley’s material for sale, and what a pile of great stuff.
A great looking hat!
