10th Cavalry Cartridge Pouch Modified From Civil War Cap Box – SOLD

This Civil War cap box made by Wilkinson, Springfield, Mass has gone under some alteration to allow it to suspend from the lower body of a regulation issue army holster. The markings on the flap indicate it was used in Co. “F”, 10th U.S, Cavalry with other numbers which probably for the soldier’s equipment number

The box is unchanged in its original appearance other than the addition of a section of leather that is sewn to each of the belt loops, and a brass buckle is applied at the top of that section for connecting to the holster. Photographic evidence exists that these “cartridge pouches” where used by the Buffalo Soldiers of the the 10th Cavalry.

Unit markings are stamped on the front flap over the original sub inspector’s stamp. Contractor’s marking is boldly stamped on the inner flap.  Condition is very good.  A scarce Indian Wars modified accoutrement that is seldom seen.

Fine condition.
