11th U.S. Infantry Officer’s Ordnance Return With Memorandum on Weapons. Captain William N. Sage received this printed form return from the Ordnance Department dated November 13, 1886, while stationed at Fort Bennett, Dakota Territory. A note in red ink at the bottom referred Sage to the included memorandum “Showing how Springfield Rifles, Bayonets, Hunting-knives, Swords, &c., …should be accounted for……”,dated May 1, 1886. These documents came in the cover from the Ordnance officer in Washington, address to the captain.
This is the first of these memorandum I have come across in all of the documents lots handled over the years from this period, certainly nothing officially mentioning Hunting knives.
