Description
1776 Pay Receipt For Making Gun Locks By Hebron Conn. Gunsmith. Written on a torn piece of paper about 8 inches long. The one sided document date October Ye 25th 1776, a receipt to Ezra Chapman of Hebron, Connecticut for two new gun locks “of his won make.” Money received from a Joseph White. Although Chapman is not listed as a gunsmith in books dedicated to that subject, I have other receipts for him, for more work on Colony weapons, particularly the repair or making of locks.
Chapman held the rank of Ensign in the militia, and was in Colonel Jeduthan Baldwin’s Artillery Regiment, and later a lieutenant in Horton’s company of Col. Baldwin’s Artificers. While a Captain in Osborn’s Company of the same regiment, Chapman died of sickness on 31 August, 1778 (one other account dates his death the day following on the first of September of that year). 77 years after his death, Congress passed an Act for the Relief of the Widow and Children .
An original historical document in fine condition.
