Description
Thomas Graham Troxel from Iowa, enlisted on August 21, 1862 as a private in Co. “E” of the 25th Iowa Infantry. He was promoted to 1st sergeant in October of 1862, and mustered out with his regiment at Washington, D.C. on June 6, 1865. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the 17th U.S. Infantry on 23 Feb. 1866, 1st lt. 6 July,1867. This regiment was largely raised in the Texas area before moving to the Carolinas in the late 1860s, then on to the frontier as of 1870.
1st Lieutenant Troxel was appointed the regimental quartermaster from 20 Oct, 1872 to 28 June, 1878. He retired in June of 1889.
During his frontier service on the plains in the 1870s, Troxel was assigned as the regimental quartermaster and apparently had no company duties, as when listed for the Yellowstone Expedition (Fort Rice), commanded by General David Stanley, and the Sioux Campaign of 1876 (Fort Abercrombie), he is listed separate from the companies and their officers.
This pay voucher dated May 31, 1871, covers the pay period for 31 May to 30 June, 1871. Troxel received $125.00 dollars for pay and an additional 10% payment for an officer having served over 5 years.
Condition is fine with some paper loss at the lower folds.
