Description
This printed form document for Captain Joel Rollin’s company of militia in the Town of Epping, New Hampshire, has to surely be the held copy of the captain’s, as the ink spotted, crudely applied paper with additional text, would suggest nothing else. The document or “Company Order” was issued to John Hayes, a private, tasked to communicate the orders to the company to appear for duty with arms and accoutrements. at Epping on Oct. 1, 1840 (this order issued on the 19th of September).
All of the names of the company are recorded on the document, both sides filled. Private John Hayes signs the document verifying that he notified and warned the company members. The document was attested to by Justice of the Peace, George C. Belton, on the 30th of September.
I won’t say ugly, but most certain a document with character, typical of small town militia of the period. Legal sized document, with some light tape residue having been in a frame at some point, with browning to the paper on the reverse due to acid in the pine wood backing of frame.
