Description

The Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, manufactured by the N.P. Ames, Cabotville, Mass.  The 36 inch blade is dated 1848, and inspected with initials, “WD.”  There were two separate orders from the Government in this year for a total of 3000 produced, however orders from 1846 were still being delivered in the yea 1848, so these could have been ordered by an earlier contract date.

The condition overall is excellent.  The blade retains most of its original bright polish, with minor scratches, a few nicks on edge and blemishes and marks from running the blade in and out of the scabbard.  The brass hilt has a wonderful untouched patina of a golden yellow brass.  Pommel cap inspected with “WD” and “JWR.” Grip leather is excellent as is the brass twist wire, both original.

The iron scabbard in free from any major dings; has a pleasing dark brown patina over entire surface, with some minor pitting toward the last few inches near the drag.

There is no history, but no doubt issued to Dragoons  just after the Mexican War; certainly possible for it to be in the hands of troops on the great plains in the late 40s-50s, and then Cavalry use in the Civil War. Dubbed the “wrist breaker” for its heft.

A super, wonderfully preserved example.
