Description

There are three New Hamptons in America; Iowa, New Hampshire, and New York, and since this hat band was found in Pennsylvania, my best guess would be either of the later two.  I have found reference to the selling of the stage line in New Hampton, NH, in the 1890’s, but have not determined how early that business began.  Your researching will add to the pleasure of owning this item.

The black bridle leather band, arches in the front to a height of 3 inches. The letters are firmly in place with wire prongs, thus I can’t determine if the letters are sterling, coin, or plate.  The look of the piece, and the use of an oval buckle on the connecting strap,  suggests the period of use Circa 1850’s give or take a few years in either direction. Leather is sound, and as you can see by the photos, the band has a great look.

I married the  hat band to the top hat, as the former looked a bit forlorn.  Made during the reign of Queen Victoria, this white wool felt top hat looks like the mid 19th Century.  The lining bears the logo of Shelton & Co., London.  Black satin banding around at the base, and molded upturned visor, the hat rises to the height of 6 inches.  The wool is a bit pockmarked by small mothing overall, but not sufficiently to detract its appearance.  Together, the two, make a great display item.  I will not separate.
