Description

1864 Ordnance Office Quarterly Report & Questionnaire – For 4th Ohio Cavalry.

A 4 page document dated June 30, 1864, at Buck Head, Ga. issued by the Quartermaster Department, “to correct the defects in the arms and equipments furnished by Cavalry, which service in the field best develops, every officer commanding a company or regiment of Cavalry is requested to supply suitable answers to the following questions……”

The questionnaire asked Lieutenant Samuel Wells of Company B, 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry these questions on horse accoutrements, rifles and carbines, pistols, sabers, and accoutrements.

The 4th Ohio was issued with both Sharps and Burnside Carbines, Captain Wells preferred the Sharps to Burnsides (see problems), and had 20 Colt Army revolvers on hand for his company, and they did not get out of order.   Apparently his company’s saber were unmarked imports, and the blades graded as tolerable. He wrote, ” they are seldom used but I think a cavalryman should have them.”  Accoutrements issued were made by E.Gaylord, Chicopee, Mass., and of good quality.

The document is in very good condition, with some areas of tenderness, but handling and reading are not an issue.

A scarce document pertaining to Cavalry arms and equipment of the Civil War dated at the time of the Atlanta Campaign.
