Description
1868/72 Model USMA Cadet Sword – Springfield Armory Made.
Developed beginning in the late 1860’s the pattern is widely known as either the 1868 and or 1872, although production began in 1868. The sword had a straight plain blade, this one 28 3/4″ x 5/8 in the diamond shape. The ricasso is stamped on two lines, “U.S. ARMORY / SPRINGFIELD.” The washer is red wool, and present in fine shape. Cast brass hilt with cone shaped pommel with a scroll extending outward from the top, and a hole in the scroll allows for a sword knot to be mounted; and has eagles incorporated into the design on both sides. The grips are cast to look like wire wrapping. The straight guard terminate with eagle head quillions with cast rope wrapped behind them. At the center of the guard above the blade marking, is the “MA” monogram in Old English letters.
The scabbard is iron and nickel plated. The upper mount has a stud for frog, and with a drag are simple in design.
Overall condition is very good- fine.
A very scare sword. No personal history.
