Description
1868 U.S. Grant Political Token dug in Western Massachusetts. The token has been holed for wear on a lapel pin. The front of the token bears the bust of “GENERAL U.S. GRANT /1868, and the reverse has a quote from Grant that he mentioned in a letter to Secretary of War Stanton, and Chief of Staff of the Army General Halleck on May 11, 1864 near Spottsylvania Court House, Va., “I PROPOSE TO FIGHT IT OUT ON THIS LINE IF IT TAKES ALL SUMMER.”
Grant’s movements south in the summer of 1864 were very costly in the terms of human losses, but he believed it necessary to wear down Lee’s army and bring the war to a close. Lincoln wanted a fighting general and he got one.
The general’s wartime exploits were used on this token to promote his candidacy for President in 1868.
28mm diameter, and appears to be bronze.
