Description
1872 Pattern Field & Staff Officer’s Boxed Dress Sword Belt. Black leather with 1 3/4 inches bullion tape applied over the outside surface. Field and Staff officers wore this solid gold bullion, where company grade officers had 3 rows of color banding according to their branch running thought on the horizontal. The bullion tape is in fine condition with some toning from age and wear. The ’72 eagle plate is a fine quality with a silver wash over the wreath and banner, now showing a dark untouched patina, and the gilt is nearly all there.
Two separate sword hangers mimic the solid bullion covering the hanger leather, and each has its original gilt brass snap swivels. The belt leather shows some areas heavier wear (see photographs). There is a good deal of extra length of the belt allowing for varying sizes perhaps up to over 40 inches.
There are no markings on the belt or buckle. The Japanned tin box has the gold stencil on the lid for “M.C. Lilley & Co./ Military & Society Goods / Long & 6th Sts / Columbus, Ohio.” Typical wear to this 14″ box, and the latch is present and functioning.
