Description
This 1885 Infantry belt was produced with 50 loops for .45/70 ammunition. Attached for use with the belt is th rare 1881 Mills belt plate (9000 sold to the U.S. Ordnance Dept.). The thin stamped brass, two piece plate did not hold up well in service, and were later replaced with the arsenal made M1886 plate.
The Mills web belt is fitted with 13 brass eyelets. The ends have three eyelets each to allow two belts to be thronged together to make a bandolier if desired. The other eyelets were used to attach brass hangers for bayonets, entrenching/hunting knives, holsters.
Condition is very good-fine, with some light fraying on lower part of some cartridge loops.
A rare belt and buckle.
