This grouping of document belonged to John Leonard who entered the Marine Corps in 1898, at Philadelphia, Pa. for a five years. He was borne in Delaware, having a prior career as a bridge builder. He was about 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 ¾ inches tall.
- Discharge dated June 23, 1903, Leonard having risen to the rank of sergeant in five years. A two sided document, the back being his military record all filled in. Signed by George C. Reid, Colonel, Adjt & Inspector & Acting Commandant. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at Vera Cruz, 1914.
- Appointment to Corporal, June 7, 1899, signed by Charles Heywood, 9th commandant of the Marine Corps. First Marine to hold the rank of major general, and he designed the USMC Good Conduct Medal.
- Appointment to Sergeant, October 1, 1901, signed by Charles Heywood. The vellum document is sewn down to a leather folder.
- Recommendation that Leonard be warranted as a First Sergeant. Submitted by detachment commander, 1st Jesse F. Dyer (on board the U.S.S. Cincinnati, Cavite, P.I.), earned the Medal of Honor at Vera Cruz in 1914, later BG.
- Discharge dated July 3, 1907, signed twice by Colonel Paul St. Clair Murphy, commanding, Fleet Marine Officer under Commodore Winfield Schley during the Spanish American War. Both sides filled out.
- 1902 Sharpshooter’s Certificate, signed by Commandant Charles Heywood, issued to Leonard in 1903.
- A signed “true copy,” by 1st Jesse F. Dyer, listing Leonard’s promotion to 1st Sergeant, dated May 10, 1906, aboard U.S.S. Cincinnati, (en-route Chemuipo, Korea).
- Final Pay Certificate, July 8, 1907, At Naval Hospital, New Fort Lyon, Colorado. Signed by Col. And paymaster.
- of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions, August 27, 1907. Leonard filed for a pension just after he left the USMC. He must have gotten tuberculosis while in service.
- A check made out to Mrs. M. Leonard, Wilmington, Del. 1919.
- A small snapshot, presumably of John Leonard, and some sprigs of picked flowers that came with the group.
Several other names need to be researched. Appointment documents are on vellum. Overall in very good collection.
