Description
18th Century British Leather Covered Document/ Jewelry Box. Constructed of wood, with applied stamp decorated leather. Iron hardware. The paper lining used is printed material, that has a stenciled pattern applied. The strings that hold the lid upright are not original, and do not detract from the appearance, and actually acting to protect the leather hinge that could tear or break completely as many of these early boxes, trunks etc. do.
Approximately 7 inches long, and 2 1/4 inches high.
There are a few tears, and worn spots, mostly on the sides. The iron latch broke at the bend over the front edge, and repaired with tacks which are missing. A easy fix. The latch is fastened on the top of the box with a great rosehead tack.
A great period box from the 18th century imported from England to her colonies. Occasionally the royal crown and King George II & III are seen, in document sized boxes.
