1902 Pattern General Officer’s Cased Epaulets, Commission & Insignia Lot for Gen. Stanley H. Ford. General Ford was promoted to brigadier general on September 1, 1930, and would have worn this set of 1902 pattern epaulets on full dress occasions to the late 1930s. Also included with this lot is a pair of his brigadier general stars, false engraved, hallmarked SILVER and one having an unrecognizable mark, both being of the sew-on variety, and a pair of gilt “U.S.” collar insignia which are unmarked early clutch-back with clutches.
I am also including his Presidential commission to brigadier, signed by the Secretary of War, Patrick J. Hurley (Hoover Administration). Also signed by the Adjutant General of the Army, Charles H, Bridges at the upper left corner of the document. Comes with a small black & white photo of Ford as brigadier, with typed photo slug.
The cased epaulets are not maker marked, but certainly of the highest quality. Unlike the earlier style from the early 1902 period, that have the applied round base with eagle and glory, this insignia is directly embroidered onto the gilt shoulder sections. The gilt is in excellent condition, as is the large fringe, etc. There are some loosening on the red velvet lining in the shoulder padding, but all there, The general staff buttons are unmarked as well. The tin case shows typical wear of scratching, rust spots, and crazing to the black Japanned surface overall.
The Commission is in excellent condition, never folded, but likely rolled at one time. Clean overall, and signatures are bold.
Stanley Hamer Ford (1877 – 1961), began his military career as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 16th U.S. Infantry, then in Cuba, on July 9, 1898, and with subsequent promotions through the years, he made the rank of major general in March of 1936, and retired a lieutenant general on January 31, 1941, after 43 years of service. His decorations include: The DSM: “For exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services, as Chief of Staff of the 27th Division, he rendered valuable services in the operations of this division. by tireless energy, good judgment, and keen foresight he proved to be an important factor in the brilliant military operations of the 27th Division.” In addition to, these other decorations and medals were awarded; Officer of the Legion of Honor (France), Croix de Guerre with Palm (Belgium), Philippine Campaign Medal, Spanish War Service Medal, Victory Medal (4 clasps), Distinguished Service Medal (New York State), with Silver Star Citation, and the Cuban Pacification Medal.
