3 Photographs Of General Henry C. Whitehead, from his earlier pre and WWI era service.
The earlies photo is a larger cabinet photo of Whitehead mounted in front of his quarters, and it is signed very boldly on the bottom left. Note is is wearing the early eagle collar insignia that would be replaced with branch insignia after 1905. This image measures 10 x 12 ” overall, and has no photographer information.
The other two images are from the WWI period when he was Colonel of Air Service in the AEF (Allied Expeditionary Force). Both images show then Colonel Whitehead wearing his overseas cap and or his Sam Browne belt, both items of the uniform only wore by officers in the AEF, not stateside. The smaller is 6.5 x 9″ (has a crease), and 7 x 9″.
Overall all are in fine condition.
Henry C. Whitehead (b 1873- Graduate USMA Class of 1896). Entered active service as a cavalry officer; served on the Mexican Border, during WWI in France and was the Asst. Chief of Air Service, and later Chief of Staff, Air Service, AEF, 1917-1919. He returned to the cavalry as a colonel in 1920, and later transferred to the Quartermaster Department and retired as the Asst to the Quartermaster General in 1834 as a brigadier general.
During his career, he was award the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star Medal for action at Santiago, Cuba, and the Purple Heart.
