Description

This is a unique pair of bullion shoulder straps for a U.S. Army major that was made by, and presumably procured in London, from the English maker E. Stillwell & Son during the first World War.  Stillwell, later Stillwell & Son, was founded in London in 1825 and made insignia for the Royal Army & Navy through the early 20th C. The box is leather covered and has the I.D. of “Major Turner, U.S. Army” printed in gold foil.

The condition of the straps is fine with light wear and heavy toning to the bullion The backing is leather and makers marked “E. STILLWELL & SON, 25 BARBICAN LONDON” in gold ink. Condition of the case is in great shape with light wear and roughing to edges and corners, but still retains the printed gold foil border design and name.

Strap measures approximately 3-7/8 inches in length by 1-3/8 inches. The case measures 5-1/8 by 4-1/2 inches.

Assuming these straps were purchased during the WWI era, there are a couple of names in the Army Register for 1918 in the artillery section, but no conclusive identification.  This is the only cased set of straps cased in this fashion that we have seen.
