British Officer’s Gilt Shoulder Belt Plate C-1810 SOLD

$1,000.00

British Officer’s Gilt Shoulder Belt Plate C-1810. Having done some research on this piece, I found one in the UK identified as a Georgian Household Cavalry Officer’s shoulder belt plate.  Nearly identical to this one being offered, it was made of bevelled copper, and engraved with a sunburst, or rayed star, surmounted by a King’s crown with royal garter with motto, “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE” (SHAMED BE HE WHO LOOKS EVIL OF IT), and “GR” at its center.  The oval border is has a intricate scalloped design.  The back side show crude maker marks, two mounting studs, and missing the hook.

Height is 84mm x 68mm.  Gilt shows wear at the high center section.

The plate can date from the late 18th Century with usage through the War of 1812 period.
