C. HOWLETT PATENT, 1867 Metallic Pistol Cartridge Box – SOLD

HOWLETT PATENT, 1867 Metallic Pistol Cartridge Box (Holder as patent reads). This box looks very much like the standard Civil War .44 Caliber Pistol box issued to U.S. troops.  Width of the flap is 7 inches for comparison.  Inside is a series of brass affixed cartridge holders with lips on either side to allow the head of the cartridge to slide into plage. and then this section of leather was inserted into the box.  Each brass section is stamped with the Howlett’s name, and Patent date, May 28, 1867. The width of the cartridge head slot will not take a 45 caliber rifle round, so perhaps for 45. Colt?

Interesting box, and the first we’ve seen.  No marking on leather.  The surface of the leather appears as if the box was made in russet and then swiped quickly to darken to bridle leather when submitting for Army field trials.

“The REPORT of the GENERAL-IN-CHIEF. REPORT of LIEUTENANT GENERAL W. T. SHERMAN. HEADQUARTERS MILITARY DIVISION of the MISSOURI St. Louis, Missouri, November 1, 1868.

Contained in these papers is the mention of Howlett’s cartridge boxes under the heading of:   List of ordnance, and ordnance stores requiring repairs, and for which purpose should be sent to an arsenal.”   This just about the only reference relating to Howlett’s boxes and the military, if this is the box referred to.

A scarce box.
