Lynde held a commission in the Regular Army prior to the Civil War, but had resigned in 1856, enlisting at the beginning of the war as an assistant surgeon of volunteers.

Description
CDV – Assistant Surgeon Richard D Lynde, A great full standing view of Lynde in full dress uniform with M1869 Staff & Field sword, and wearing a mourning armband. Lynde was captured by confederate forces in April-May of 1861; later was chief surgeon in General Samuel Beatty’s IV Corps during the Atlanta Campaign.
