Photographed here as colonel of cavalry in full dress uniform, and later a general in the Dept. of the South and in an unauthorized order emancipated slaves in three states but immediately nullified that order. Presided over the trail of the conspirators convicted in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, and other members of his cabinet.
