Great quality and condition in this Matthew Brady CDV of Major General George B. McClellan and his staff, taken in 1861.
From left to right are Captain Henry Clarke, General McClellan, Captain Stewart Van Vliet, and Major William Barry. Clarke would soon after this photo was taken be promoted to Colonel and ADC; breveted brigadier general for gallant and meritorious service at the Battle of Gettysburg. Captain Stewart Van Vliet promoted to brigadier general and later to major general in the Quarter Master Department. William Barry was promoted to brigadier general shortly after this image was taken, and major general of volunteers during the war.
A very nice image of McClellan’s early staff officers.
