Description

CDV – Lt. Anthony – 1st Iowa Infantry of African Descent.  Jonathan Anthony first enlisted in the 4th Iowa Cavalry as a private on October 14, 1861, and mustered into company “F.”  He was discharged for promotion on November 6, 1863, where upon he was commissioned in the 1st Iowa Infantry of African Descent, which later transferred to the 60th Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops.

While serving with the 4th Iowa Cavalry, Anthony was captured at the battle at Black River Bridge, Miss. on June 22, 1863.  I have some photocopied records for him placing him in these two units.

The image is very good- fine condition with some light scratches on the image. The mount is signed, “1st Iowa Inft A.D. / E & J Anthony.” “E” is for Elizabeth his wife, photographed with him.  The card is also signed on the back, “Yours Truly / Lt. J. and “E” Anthony.”

Photographed by T.L. River’s, St. Louis, Mo.
