Description
CDV – Major General Ambrose Burnside.
Burnside was a graduate of the USMA Class of 1847, arrived in Mexican just as the war was ending, but stationed in the Nevada-California region protecting western mail routes, where he was wounded in the neck by an Apache arrow in a skirmish in Las Vegas, NM in 1851. After leaving the army, he became the commanding general of the Rhode Island militia, and used a good deal of time to manufacturing firearms that would eventually bear his name.
Burnside had many commands during the war, and was commander of the Army of the Potomac during the Battle of Antietam. Was governor of Rhode Island after the war.
