Thomas C. Meatyard, entered service as a 1st lieutenant in the 27th Illinois Infantry in August of 1861, and resigned in June of 1862, commissioned a captain in the U.S. Volunteers Adjutant General’s Department; he was attached to Napoleon Bonaparte Buford’s staff in the Department of Eastern Arkansas. Meatyard would likely have seen action at the battles of Belmont, Missouri, and Farmington, Mississippi.
