A scarce image of Col. James H. Dayton, of the 4th West Virginia Infantry, photographed by Partridge’s Gallery, Wheeling, Va.
James Dayton enlisted in July of 1861 as a captain in Co. K, and remained with the regiment, rising to the rank of Colonel on May 9, 1863. He was discharged in July of 1864. The regiment’s first major engagement was at Vicksburg, Ms., then Missionary Ridge, Tenn. and more.
Note the wearing of a “4” on his frock. His bow tie has been tinted blue, a commonly seen effect seen in other images of Dayton.
The image is soiled, very good otherwise for a hard cdv to locate.
