Description
CDV – “Old Ironsides” U.S.S. Constitution. Identified with period ink on the reverse. Taken at the USNA, Annapolis, Md., at the docks during the early part of the Civil War. Another frigate is seen behind the Constitution.
Constitution is seen without sails, as she was being used as a school ship at Annapolis prior to the Government removing the Naval Academy to Newport during the Civil War. After her refit at Portsmouth Navy Yard for use of quarters by midshipmen at the Academy, Constitution was sent back to Annapolis, and after the start of the war, in 1861, war sent back north for safe keeping.

“Old Ironsides” is the United States Navy’s oldest commissioned warship with a fabulous history.
