Description

CDV – Photograph of a Letter From Treasury Secretary John A. Dix 1861.

This photographed letter by Dix was written while Secretary of the Treasury under President Buchanan.  Addressed from the Treasury Department, Jan.29, 1861.  “Tell Lieut. Caldwell to arrest Capt. Breshwood, assume command of the Cutters and the order I gave through you. If Capt. Breshwood after arrest undertakes to interfere with the command of the cutters, tell Lieut. Caldwell to consider him as a mutineer – treat him accordingly.  If anyone attempts to haul down the American Flag, shot him on the spot.  John A. Dlx, …”

Secretary of the Treasury, John A. Dix issued a dispatch regarding USRC Robert L. McLelland whose commander Captain John G. Breshwood was a Southern sympathizer who refused to sail the ship north as ordered.  Both Lt. Breshwood and Caldwell subsequently resigned from the service and pledged loyalty to the Confederacy. (from: Revenue Cutter & Lighthouse Service Civil War Chronology).

Photographed by Matthew Brady, and published by Anthony, New York.
