Description

CDV Signed- Lieutenant Harrison Simonds- 1st Mass Battery Light Artillery.

Harrison Simonds, a Boston Painter, enlisted as a private into the Mass 1st Light Battery on May 18, 1861. He joined the regiment at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md, and mustered out at Camp Clare, Baltimore on August 2, 1861.

On December 3, 1861, Simonds mustered into the 5th Mass Battery, and rose through the ranks from private, corporal, sergeant, 1st sergeant, 2nd and 1st lieutenant by August of 1864. The 5th Mass Battery was actively engaged in many important battles beginning with Gaines Mills, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spottsylvania, Bethesda Church, Petersburg, and more.

Taken by T. Barbour of Boston, this signed image shows Simonds as a 1st Lieutenant in the 5th Mass Battery, and his signature reads, “Yours Truly,/  H. O. Simonds Lt. / Batt’y E, Mass Art’y.”

The image is very good, with rounded corners, and ink stains on back affecting the cancelled revenue stamp.
