Description
Chestnut Fob With Gold Banding, Seal & Chain – 1863 Souvenir From Savannah.
The gold chain holding the souvenir chestnut, is attached to a delicate lady’s fob that clipped to a pocket, that held her signet, with the initials, “F.H.” and perhaps the mother, or wife, etc. of this private, A.C. Hunt. I was told it belonged to Hunt, a private in the 61st North Carolina Infantry who served in the Confederate Army from 1862- 1864. The unit’s history meshes with this souvenir being picked up while in Savannah.
The chestnut is small and roughly 3/4 inches (largest measure), and is cross banded with gold. One section has pulled away from the center round hub on one side. The horizontal band reads, “PICKED UP AT / SAVANNAH GA / (then vertical) BY A.C. HUNT / 1863.
