Description

Civil War Receipt For Cavalry Bugle – January 6, 1862, purchased from John Church, Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio, and purchased by Colonel Nathaniel Collins McLean, of the city who became the colonel of the 75th OVI, enlisting on September 18. 1861, and discharged on December 3, 1862. He was commissioned on that same day as Brigadier General into the U.S. Volunteer General Staff and resigned in April of 1865.

The bugle purchased by Col. McLean may have been a replacement for another lost during the Battle of the 2nd Bull Run a few months prior.

While he was with the regiment, the 74th fought in three larger battles, at McDowell, Va., Cedar Mountain, and the 2nd Bull Run.

McLean commanded a brigade at Chancellorsville, and another during the Atlanta Campaign, and saw more actions. After the war he returned home and went back to his law practice.

A nice wartime billhead for a dealer of musical instruments, foreign and American music.

Fine condition.
